The Comfortable Cold
Have you ever been in the shower and out of nowhere the scalding hot water turned freezing?
The worst is when there is so much more to do, and you're thinking to yourself "if it would just turn warm for a couple more seconds, I will be ready to get out."
There are a couple different levels of cold.
There is the freezing cold and there is the cold that could almost be mistaken as warm.
Now you may think, why am I reading something about water temperature?
Hear me out, sometimes we are like water temperature.
Faith has levels, and it fluctuates in temperature.
We may be able to adjust our warm and cold, but sometimes it changes out of our control.
Sometimes things cause this and we are able to provide explanation for why there was a sudden change.
But sometimes, there is no explanation and we cannot explain why something so comforting turned to something so miserable and out of our control.
What causes our faith, like the water to turn ice cold?
Is it shame?
Is it anger?
Is it fear?
Is it jealousy?
Is it comparison?
Do we even know?
When I started this blog, I was on fire for God.
My water was scalding, it was so hot that I was caught off guard.
But I learned to adjust it to a comfortable temperature.
Until my water turned cold when I was just getting started.
It was the cold that could be mistaken as warm, and I accepted it, realizing that I was going to have to give it time before I could have warm water again.
What if there was a way that we could make our water warm as soon as it got cold?
Would we choose to make it warm or would we just give up and take the cold water?
Odds are, most of us would do whatever it takes to have a couple more moments of warm water.
Are we willing to step out of the cold to get to the warm water?
Proverbs 3:1-8 says:
"My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones."
If we are so focused on our water being cold, we are going to be miserable.
But if we focus on how to get the water warm again, every time it becomes cold, we will know how to get it warm again.
When we are paying attention to the things we are and aren't supposed to do as Christians, we are focusing on the cold water.
When we dive into the Word of the Lord, we are learning how to get it warm.
Diving into the Lord's Word, secures a pathway to warm water.
The Lord's Word is the key to the good life. The life of peace and prosperity. The life that will bring health and nourishment.
